Heat Resistant Bioplastic for Eyeglasses

Von daianna, 08:15

Boston Club Co.Ltd specifies the Biofront brand of high-heat bioplastic for it Japonism series of eyeglasses, which will be available at retail stores in Japan from this May.

Biofront’s bioplastic is different from conventional PLA in that it comprises solely of poly-D-lactic acid enantiomer as against the conventional PLA’s poly-L-lactic acid polymer, which constitutes to a melting point more than 40°C than standard PLA, making the heat resistance of Biofront equal to the petroleum-derived polybutylene terephthalate (PBT).

Acetate is commonly used for the plastic parts of eyeglasses, but contact with cosmetics or hair-styling products can bleach the material. But. Biofron’s material ca overcome this with its high resistance to bleaching and bacteria, and has good hydrolytic stability and achieves semi-crystallization in just 20-25% of the time required by conventional PLA, contributing to its application in  many molded-plastic applications.

Its worth to mention that Teijin collaborated with Tanaka Foresight Inc. in 2009, which manufactures and sells approximately 60% of all plastic eyeglass parts in Japan, to develop eyeglass frames made from Biofront.
